The Whitecourt WITA Tourism Association focuses on promoting and preserving the unique traditions, customs, and lifestyle of the Alexis Nakota Sioux people.
We offer visitors the opportunity to experience the rich and diverse culture of the Alexis Nakota Sioux people and to learn about our history, values, customs and beliefs.
Your visit will provide opportunities to engage in cultural activities, such as traditional dance performances, storytelling, and craft making, which provides a glimpse into the daily lives of the Alexis Nakota Sioux.

Indigenous tourism provides an income for communities and can help to preserve our cultural heritage by allowing us to share our stories, traditions, and skills with you. Whitecourt is located in the heart of Alberta, known for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. The town is surrounded by rolling hills, sprawling forests, and pristine lakes, making it the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The Alexis Nakota Sioux people of Whitecourt have a rich cultural heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation. From traditional storytelling to hand-crafted artisanal goods, visitors to Whitecourt can immerse themselves in the rich culture of the Nakota Sioux.
An important attraction, now under construction in Whitecourt is the Whitecourt Culture and Events Centre, scheduled for completion in 2025. A multi-use facility, the Culture and Event Centre will include a showcase of the rich history and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the area. Visitors can learn about the Nakota Sioux people that have called Whitecourt home for thousands of years, and discover the unique customs, beliefs, and practices that have shaped the local community.
Outdoor Adventure in Whitecourt
Whitecourt is an outdoor lover's paradise, with a wealth of opportunities for outdoor adventure. From hiking and fishing to kayaking and wildlife watching, there is something for everyone.
About 24 minutes east of Whitecourt you’ll find Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park, which preserves mixed-wood forests and wetlands. The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including mule deer, moose, black bear, coyote, and lynx. Bird species also flock to the area, water birds like loons, blue jays, and black-capped chickadees. In addition to wildlife viewing, the park is a destination for fishing — in fact, it’s one of Alberta’s best areas to fish for trout. Other park activities include beach fun and water sports at McLeod Lake, hiking, camping, and geocaching.
