Nakota Culinary Experience

Join us for this full day cultural immersion experience focused on traditional Nakota food.

Culinary Experience

In the morning session, join us for a hands-on bannock-making steeped in Nakota tradition. Begin with a ceremonial protocol to honor Nakota customs, setting the tone for this authentic culinary experience. Under the guidance of our facilitator, follow easy-to-follow instructions to mix ingredients, prepare dough, and craft delicious bannock. Cook your bannock over a crackling campfire using natural elements like flat boulders or black diamond willow, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for sharing stories and laughter with fellow participants.

After a break for lunch, delve into the world of Nakota meat preservation. Led by our knowledgeable facilitator, learn time-honored techniques for slicing and hanging fresh beef or buffalo roast on the drying rack. Discover the rhythmic pounding methods used to transform prepared dry meat into pound meat, with additional options available for purchase from expert makers. Gain insights into wood product usage and fire maintenance for optimal drying, engaging in Q&A sessions to deepen your understanding of Nakota preservation practices.

Join us for this immersive experience and unlock the secrets of Nakota culinary heritage.
